It’s Jeff Bezos,
piloting a giant robot at Amazon’s MARS conference

If you’re one of Amazon’s competitors, be afraid. Be very afraid. Jeff Bezos, the Seattle-based online giant’s billionaire founder, has tweeted a picture of himself at the controls of a giant robot. And he’s smiling.

The Method-2 robot’s arms stretch wide with Amazon’s billionare founder, Jeff Bezos, at the controls.

“Why do I feel so much like Sigourney Weaver?” Bezos can be heard saying in a video clip from the demonstration, which took place at a hush-hush conference organized by Amazon in Southern California.

This robot isn’t meant to fight off scary xenomorphs like the one that menaced Weaver’s character in the movie “Aliens.” And it’s not designed to deliver packages, either. It’s the 14-foot-tall Method-2 robot, developed at Hankook Mirae Technology’s lab near Seoul in South Korea.

To create the 1.5-ton monstrosity, Hankook Mirae’s engineers worked with Hollywood robot designer Vitaly Bulgarov, who has been involved in mech-monster movie franchises such as Transformers, RoboCop and Terminator.

Method-2 is controlled by a pilot who sits inside a cockpit in the robot’s torso, as Bezos demonstrates in the picture he tweeted.

The contraption been compared to the exoskeletons seen in such movies as “Avatar” and “Aliens,” or the giant Gundam robots from Japan’s popular anime TV series.

Мощно Дональд воодушевил общество на занятие политикой. Проснулись люди творческих профессий, и осознали личную отвественность за политику страны.

http://www.wmagazine.com

On a recent afternoon during New York Fashion Week, between shows and presentations, models, photographers, designers, and stylists took a break to to come together at Chelsea's Milk Studios. The reason was simple. At the urging of W magazine, they had all gathered to make a united and defiant statement on video, and one by one they faced the camera and said: “I am an immigrant.”
In the aftermath of President Donald J. Trump’s now legally-challenged refugee ban, there’s been an outrage from all corners of the world towards the White House’s apparent anti-immigration policies. Fashion people aren’t as insulated as they might seem; they’ve been equally appalled by the rhetoric stemming from Washington, perhaps because so many members of this colorful community are immigrants themselves, certainly friends, partners, collaborators, admirers of immigrant artists and designers.
https://youtu.be/GE0Qx_P0BwU

In a corner of the studio, W’s creative and fashion director, Edward Enninful, who was born in Ghana and raised in the United Kingdom, held court as designer Joseph Altuzarra, a native Frenchman, arrived on set with a three-month-old puppy for moral support. Diane von Furstenberg, the Belgian-American designer who was a staunch supporter of Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential campaign, stepped in front of the camera, ad-libbing: “I thought I’d say, ‘I am an immigrant and proud to be,’” she said. Then, she thought of a couplet: “I am an immigrant and America’s been good to me.”

“The future is female.” Far from an unheard phrase, designer Prabal Gurung seems adamant that fashion should continue to take part in the global conversation on feminism, now more than ever before. In this exclusive video by Kloss Films, we get a rare glimpse into the designer’s world as he preps for his decadently colorful Fall 2017 collection.

Skyler Shuford, worked at SpaceX
Rocket controls engineer at a startup. Past: SpaceX, Aerojet

Basically, just hold a meeting when necessary

When I was there in 2015, SpaceX meetings were rare, but I would say they were most common in my group. I worked in Dragon Development, which is essentially project/systems engineering for the variety of Dragon products. We needed to coordinate many different groups in order to synchronize the assembly and hit deadlines. So getting the group leads together made sense.

One of my close friends started there a couple years before me. He worked (and still does) in an analysis group, so meetings made less sense when you could just walk over and ask someone a question. He told me a story one time (this is paraphrased):

Elon to a meeting member: “You haven’t said anything. Why are you in here?”

That may be borderline rude, but it makes sense. Don’t be in a meeting unless there’s a purpose for it; either to make a decision, or get people up to speed. In most cases, an email will suffice.

Meetings are expensive. Assuming the fully-encumbered cost of an engineer can be between $80–$100 per hour, having a 10 person meeting can cost a company around $1000 an hour!

For $1000 per hour, that meeting better damn well be worth it.

Donald J. Trump

Today I met with pharmaceutical executives at the White House.
US drug companies have produced extraordinary results for our country, but the pricing has been astronomical for our country. We have to do better. We have to get lower prices, we have to get even better innovation.

I expressed to the executives that I want them to move their companies back to the United States -- and I want them to manufacture in the United States.

Our trade policy will prioritize that foreign countries pay their fair share for U.S.-manufactured drugs, so our drug companies have greater financial resources to accelerate development of new cures -- I think that’s so important!

Right now it’s very unfair what other countries are doing to us - and in order to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN -- we all need to work together right here in the United States of America.

10. “When you come to a fork in the road, take it.” – Yogi Berra

9. “Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.” – Maria Robinson

8. “I can't change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.” – Jimmy Dean

7. “What you're supposed to do when you don't like a thing is change it. If you can't change it, change the way you think about it. Don't complain.” – Maya Angelou

Schools hope to install solar systems
and
improve energy efficiency
http://gulfnews.com

Abu Dhabi: Nine schools from around the world are vying to be selected as winners of the prestigious Zayed Future Energy Prize, which will announce its results during the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week next month (January 2017).
The prize will allow three schools — one each from Oceania, Americas and Europe — to work towards their water and energy efficiency goals, the organising committee for the Prize told Gulf News.

The Prize, which has been awarded in the Global High Schools category since 2012, has already empowered 24 schools around the world to promote training and research in sustainability and clean energies. These schools have together reduced 1,000 tonnes of carbon emissions, benefiting 37,000 people in surrounding communities.

To be in the running for the award, schools submit a detailed project proposal that includes measurable initiatives to promote renewable energy and sustainability.

This year, a secondary school in the Polynesian island state of Samoa, Aana 2 College, has announced plans to build a bio-digester if it can win the Prize. Students will install, operate and maintain the system, which will reuse local farming waste in a bid to generate biogas energy. Students can then play an active role in selling this energy.

China invested a record $32 billion in global renewable energy projects during 2016 and is expecting to invest at least $361 billion into its own renewable energy sector by 2020, securely placing China as the leading clean energy player in the world.

Two new pieces of news have coincided to show that China is likely to overtake the United States as the most important global player in the clean energy sector.

Last Thursday, China announced that it will invest at least $361 billion into renewables by 2020 — a move which will serve to continue China’s transition away from coal and other dirty fuels. “Renewable energy will be the pillar for China’s energy structure transition,” said Li Yangzhe, deputy head of the National Energy Administration, the official Xinhua news agency reported (via Reuters)

Further information has not been made apparent — as to just how these moneys will be spent and in which sectors — but the announcement serves as another reminder that China, despite stereotypes to the contrary, is emerging as the most powerful and determined player in the global clean energy sector.

This news was backed up by a report published late last week by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA), which concluded that China invested $32 billion in overseas clean energy projects, up 60% year-over-year. This serves to further solidify China’s growing global leadership in the clean energy sector — a leadership which is only likely to widen as President-Elect Donald Trump dumps the ‘Elect’ from his title. “The change in leadership in the U.S. is likely to widen China’s global leadership in industries of the future, building China’s dominance in these sectors in terms of technology, investment, manufacturing and employment,” states the report, China’s Global Renewable Energy Expansion: How the World’s Second-Biggest Economy Is Positioned to Lead the World in Clean-Power Investment.

The author of the report, the IEEFA’s Tim Buckley, added that the US is likely set to become less competitive economically if the incoming Trump administration follows through on its catastrophic energy and climate agenda.
